Ingredients

For the Bread
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour or use whole wheat flour for a more nutritious option
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon freshly ground is best for flavor
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil substitute with applesauce for a lighter version
  • 1 cup sugar can reduce for less sweetness or use brown sugar for deeper flavor
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups peeled and diced apples Granny Smith or Honeycrisp are preferred for their crispness
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans optional, but adds a delightful crunch
For the Topping
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x5-inch loaf pan.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Set aside.
  3. In another large bowl, combine the vegetable oil and sugar, mixing until well blended. Add the eggs and vanilla, continuing to mix until the mixture is smooth.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring just until combined. The batter will be thick.
  5. Fold in the diced apples and nuts (if using) until evenly distributed throughout the batter.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan, smoothing it out with a spatula.
  7. In a small bowl, combine the topping ingredients (sugar and cinnamon), then sprinkle it evenly over the top of the batter.
Baking
  1. Bake in the preheated oven for 60–70 minutes or until golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  2. Allow the bread to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Use fresh apples for the best flavor and texture. Don’t overmix the batter to prevent dense bread. This recipe can be made gluten-free with a suitable flour blend.
