Ingredients

For the Dough
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour Use fresh, unbleached flour for a lighter texture.
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar Substitute with coconut sugar for a healthier option.
  • 1 packet instant yeast This ensures a good rise.
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup warm milk About 110°F; use almond or oat milk for dairy-free.
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted Can substitute with coconut oil for a richer flavor.
  • 1 large egg Should be at room temperature.
For the Filling
  • 2 large apples, peeled and diced Granny Smith or Honeycrisp recommended.
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice Prevents apples from browning.
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
For the Topping
  • 1 tablespoon butter, melted To brush on top.
  • A sprinkle of coarse sugar For a sweet, crunchy finish.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, granulated sugar, instant yeast, and salt.
  2. In another bowl, mix the warm milk, melted butter, and egg together.
  3. Slowly pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, stirring until a rough dough forms.
Kneading and Rising
  1. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
  2. Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
Preparing the Filling
  1. While the dough is rising, combine the diced apples and lemon juice in a small bowl.
  2. Add the brown sugar and cinnamon to the apples, mix well, and set aside.
Shaping the Dough
  1. Once the dough has risen, punch it down gently and turn it out onto a floured surface.
  2. Roll the dough into a rectangle about 12x18 inches.
  3. Spread the apple mixture evenly over the dough, leaving a 1-inch border.
Creating the Swirl
  1. Starting from one long side, roll the dough tightly into a log.
  2. Pinch the seams to seal, then place the log seam side down.
Final Rising and Baking
  1. Carefully transfer the log to a greased 9x5-inch loaf pan.
  2. Cover with a kitchen towel and let it rise for another 30-45 minutes until it puffs up.
  3. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Once the loaf has risen, brush with melted butter and sprinkle with coarse sugar.
  4. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
Cooling and Serving
  1. Remove the loaf from the oven and let it cool in the pan for about 10 minutes.
  2. Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
