Method
Preparation and Dough Rising
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm milk, granulated sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until bubbly.
- Add the melted butter, egg, and salt into the yeast mixture. Gradually add in the flour, mixing until a dough forms.
- Transfer the dough to a floured surface. Knead for about 5-7 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
Filling Preparation and Rolling
- While the dough rises, in a medium bowl, toss diced apples with brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and cornstarch until well coated.
- Once risen, punch down the dough and roll it out on a floured surface into a rectangle about 1/4-inch thick.
- Evenly spread the apple filling over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges.
- Starting from one long edge, tightly roll the dough into a log. Slice the log into 1 to 1.5-inch thick rolls.
- Place the rolls cut-side up in a greased baking dish. Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.
Baking and Glazing
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
- While the rolls are baking, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth.
- Once done, remove the rolls from the oven and drizzle the glaze over the top while still warm. Enjoy!
Notes
You can use store-bought apple pie filling if you’re short on time. For a gluten-free option, substitute all-purpose flour with a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend.
