Ingredients

  • 8 slices sandwich bread (white, sourdough, ciabatta, or Texas toast)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tbsp Italian seasoning
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 cup marinara or pizza sauce
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup sliced pepperoni

Equipment

  • nonstick skillet
  • mixing bowl
  • spatula
  • cutting board
  • knife

Method

  1. Preheat a nonstick skillet over medium heat to prevent sogginess.
  2. In a small bowl, mix Parmesan, Italian seasoning, and garlic powder for the crust coating.
  3. Spread butter on one side of each bread slice. Sprinkle with Parmesan mixture and press lightly.
  4. On the plain side of one bread slice, spread marinara, top with mozzarella and pepperoni, then close with another bread slice (buttered side out).
  5. Press a few pepperoni slices onto the outside of the buttered bread for extra crunch.
  6. Cook sandwiches in skillet for 4–6 minutes per side until bread is golden and cheese is melted.
  7. Transfer to a cutting board, slice in half, and serve immediately.

Notes

Use low-moisture mozzarella for the best melt and stretch. Try vegetarian toppings like mushrooms, spinach, or bell peppers for a lighter twist. Swap mozzarella with provolone or cheddar for a different flavor. Gluten-free bread works great if needed. Serve hot with tomato soup or extra marinara for dipping.
