Ingredients

For the Bread Base
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (for best results, use unbleached flour)
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder (ensure it’s fresh for effective rising)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (enhances flavor)
  • 1/4 cup sugar (optional, depending on your sweetness preference)
  • 1 cup milk (dairy or plant-based alternatives work well)
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil or melted butter (adds moisture)
  • 2 large eggs (for structure and richness)
Optional Add-ins
  • 1 cup mashed bananas (for a moist, sweet flavor)
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans for crunch)
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips (a treat for the sweet tooth)
  • 1 tablespoon herbs (like rosemary or thyme for savory bread)

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x5-inch loaf pan, or line it with parchment paper for easier removal.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar until well combined.
  3. In another bowl, beat together the milk, oil or butter, and eggs until you have a smooth mixture. If you’re using add-ins like banana or additional flavorings, mix them in now.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Stir gently until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.
  5. Fold in any optional ingredients like nuts or chocolate chips until evenly distributed.
Baking
  1. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and smooth the top with a spatula.
  2. Bake for 45 to 55 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  3. Once baked, remove the bread from the oven and let it sit in the pan for about 10 minutes. Then, transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

Notes

Use fresh baking powder and good-quality ingredients for best flavor. You may freeze leftovers, wrapped tightly for up to 3 months. Experiment by adding citrus zest for a refreshing twist. For a gluten-free option, use a gluten-free flour blend.
