Preparation
- Lightly spread butter on one side of each slice of bread. If using Dijon mustard, spread it on the unbuttered side for an added layer of flavor.
Layering
- On two of the unbuttered sides, layer half of the smoked Gouda cheese, followed by the apple slices, and then the remaining Gouda on top. Top with the remaining slices of bread, buttered side up.
Grilling
- Preheat a skillet over medium heat. Once hot, place one sandwich in the skillet and grill for about 3-4 minutes, or until the bread turns golden brown.
- Carefully flip the sandwich using a spatula and grill for an additional 3-4 minutes until the second side is golden and the cheese has melted.
Serving
- Remove the grilled cheese from the skillet, slice diagonally, and serve warm. Optionally, you can add a sprinkle of sea salt on top for added flavor.
Notes
For best flavor, choose quality smoked Gouda from a local cheesemonger. Leftover grilled cheese sandwiches can be stored in the fridge and reheated in the oven for a crispy finish. Experiment with different types of bread for unique flavors.
