Sauce Base
  • 2 tablespoons butter Use unsalted for better control of seasoning.
  • 2 tablespoons margarine
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour Ensure it's sifted for a smoother texture.
  • 1 cube chicken bouillon, crumbled For a vegetarian version, substitute with vegetable broth.
  • 1.5 cups boiling water
  • 1 cup 2% milk Use whole milk for a creamier sauce.
  • to taste ground white pepper

  1. Gather the ingredients.
Cooking
  1. Melt butter and margarine in a saucepan over medium-low heat.
  2. Add flour and crumbled bouillon; stir until well blended, about 1 to 2 minutes.
  3. Continue to cook and stir until thickened and lightly browned, approximately 5 minutes.
  4. Increase the heat to medium and whisk in boiling water until smooth.
  5. Stir in milk; cook and stir until the sauce is hot and thickened, about 2 to 3 more minutes.
  6. Season with white pepper to taste.

Notes

For a heartier meal, consider adding veggies, chicken, or shrimp. Grated cheese can enhance the flavor further.
